Who Is the Holy Spirit? What He Does and The Gifts of the Spirit

March 9, 2025— Before Jesus went through His trial, He told His disciples to keep His commandments. By doing so, the disciples (and all believers) would receive the Holy Spirit from God (see John 14:15-17).  During Jesus’s resurrection, He came to the disciples and, breathed on them. Jesus told them to “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22).

My brothers and sisters in Christ, there has been some confusion about the Holy Spirit's function and whether He is a person or a spiritual entity. Today, I set out to clarify the truth of the Holy Spirit and give you a better understanding.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is one individual through the Godhead (God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit). Remember, God made us in His image (Genesis 1:26). Therefore, as God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one but three distinct individuals, your flesh, spirit, and soul are one. You receive the Holy Spirit when you accept Jesus Christ as your savior and are baptized.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do?

The Holy Spirit guides you on your Christian journey helping you to recall Jesus’s teachings. John 14:26 states, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” In speaking to you, the Holy Spirit will lead you to the truth of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 12:3). He will not turn you toward false doctrines or false prophets.

The Spiritual Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Moreover, Paul explains how the same Spirit operates in us all to give us spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4). These spiritual gifts are:

1.      Wisdom

2.      Knowledge

3.      Faith

4.      Healing

5.      Working of Miracles

6.      Prophecy

River, Flowing Water
Often times, the Holy Spirit is described as flowing water in the Holy Bible and within the Christian Community. I like using rivers to represent the Holy Spirit.

Accepting Jesus Christ

If you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I invite you to do so now. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came in the flesh. Being innocent, Jesus died on the cross to pay the price of your sin. Three days later, Jesus Christ was resurrected in the flesh. Walking in the resurrected body for 40 days, Jesus ascended to the right hand of God. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ, I invite you to do so now. All it takes is saying this prayer aloud:

God, I confess that Jesus came in the flesh and blood, paid the price for my sins, died on the cross, rose on the third day, ascended to the heavens, and sent the Holy Spirit to help me understand Your ways. For that, I accept Jesus Christ as my savior and Lord, and I welcome the Holy Spirit in my life. In Jesus’s name, I pray, amen!
